Tis with pleasure that I sit down this morning to wright a few lines to you. We got to Washington Monday morning at 6 o'clock & after breakfast went into Camp, staid 3 days & pulled up & moved 3 miles & pitched our tents in sight of the great capital 2 miles of it is truly great. It covers 38 1/2 acres of ground, it's 450 feet from the basement to the top of the doom. It is built of brick & faced with white marble. I shall fail entirely to describe the building. It is the nicest thing I ever saw in all my life. You might if hear go up into the doome & there see 200 & fifty thousand men in camp. The tents look like snow banks as far as the eye can see every way. The sound of the drum and the thunder of artillery & the playing of the bands is all that the ear can hear night & day. In fact it is all war here. We have no snow hear yet.
Rather cold hear night but pleasant days. We shall move again Tuesday into Dixey about 10 miles from the camp. We now occupy in the Rebel country in Virginia. You must write to me to tell me all the news you can. Go & visit my family as you can & I will be very much oblige to you the boys from our? I can't think of anything any more important. Direct your letters to Washington in care of Capt Tenbrook, 86 Reg N. The 86th New York became known as the Steuben Rangers.
