WE ARE COMING FATHER ABRAHAM was a poem written by James S. Gibbons in response to a July 1862 call by President Lincoln for 300,000 more volunteers. This call came in response to McClellan's unsuccessful invasion of Richmond via the James River peninsula, which culminated in the Seven Days battles. It was set to music by several composers including Stephen Collins Foster and William Cullen Bryant. The envelope shows US troops marching in response to this call, but the poem is rewritten to 600,000 more. Envelope is mailed to David Thomas of Winchester, Columbiana Co.
